Situated in the very uncommercialised Cote d’Or département of Burgundy, La Forge is in a quiet village between Laignes (5 k.) and Chatillon-sur-Seine (12 k.), surrounded by miles of unspoilt open countryside.
As well as forests and rivers in the local area, there is a very pretty LAKE just 15 minutes’ walk from the house. This offers scope for walking, fishing and, in July and August, supervised swimming. There is also a heated swimming pool at Chatillon-sur-Seine.
There is a BAR/RESTAURANT at the lake, with tables outside and an excellent cold buffet in summer. Hot food is also available and the restaurant upstairs has a wonderful view of the lake.
Near the lake is a small sanctuary for mules, donkeys and horses, where HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDES can usually be arranged.
There are many good RESTAURANTS nearby: at Laignes (5 k.); Balot (9 k.); several at Chatillon-sur-Seine (12 k.); or a little further afield at Les Riceys (20 k.). Check our book at the house for details. The renowned Bernard LOISEAU Michelin-starred restaurant is at SAULIEU, directly south.
There are two wonderful RENAISSANCE CHATEAUX within ½ hour’s drive. For days out, it’s an easy drive (about 1 – 1½ hours) to DIJON, BEAUNE. Also easy accessible EPOISSES (wonderful cheese ..), SEMUR-EN-AUXOIS; the famous mediaeval town of VEZELAY lies to the west.
It’s also very convenient to take the train from MONTBARD (½ hour drive) to DIJON, BEAUNE or even the TGV train to PARIS (1 hr. 5mins)
There are many early churches in the region, some with 16th century stained glass windows. The beautiful Abbaye de Fontenay is near Montbard. In Chatillon-sur-Seine there’s a small museum of Gallo-Roman artefacts including an amazing bronze vase discovered in the countryside nearby.
Since the house is effectively between Champagne and the wine districts of Burgundy, there are lots of opportunities for CHAMPAGNE and WINE TASTING and many bargains to be had.
The house is part of an old forge, dates from about 1850 and has many original features dating from that period. If you love houses with character this is for you!
